Worry gnawed at me as I finished reading and almost immediately, the door to the room opened and I flinched. Annie’s face came into view and I quickly hid my phone behind my back while Annie looked at me confusedly.

“Uhm..What is that?” She asked suspiciously, entering the room fully.

“It..it not..thing” I stuttered.

“So why are your hands behind your back?” Annie asked moving towards me.

“Uhm..it nothing” I laughed nervously. “I was just..you know, about to grab lunch”

“Why don’t I believe you?” Annie raised a brow.

“Am not hiding anything” I quickly said.

“I didn’t say you are hiding something. Did I?” She retorted giving me a look.

Oops! Busted!

“No…no..I just said that because you feel like am hiding something…when in actual fact,…am not”

Annie was about to talk but I Beat her to it.

“Look..a bird.!”

As Annie faced the direction I pointed at, I took the clue to rush out of the room.

On getting to the living room, I touched my chest breathing heavily and I sat down on the couch praying Annie doesn’t come after me.

I took my time to reflect on the message Asher sent me. He wants to meet up, why exactly?

This is all so confusing and a part of his message got me. About me not winning the case and wasting my time.

Fear splintered my heart almost immediately. What if he is right? What if I don’t win the case? What would my fate be?

“Be positive, camille..be positive” my subconscious screamed at me and I raised my hand up in surrender.

“Okay..okay..I will be” I said to myself.

Positive thoughts from now on.

Annie and I are in the dining room having late lunch. I was glad she didn’t ask me about what happened earlier.

Am just going to ignore Asher. He can continue texting me, I don’t care.

Till we meet in court, I don’t want to see him.

“So I called Chloe ” I announced breaking the annoying silence between us.

Annie’s face immediately lighten up.

“What? Really? Are you kidding me?” She rushed her questions and I chuckled.

“Well I did and she agreed to meet up tomorrow”

“Wow..this is great! Camille, you are great..”

“You sound more happy than I am”

“Of course I should. So where are we meeting up? And what time?”

“Don’t know yet but afternoon is preferable. Just chill and eat” I said.

“Sure..sure..mommy” Annie grinned.

{THE NEXT DAY]

1:15pm

Annie and I are all dressed up. I already called Chloe and she told me she is on her way to the coffee shop we are supposed to meet.

I breath in and out. “Nervous?” Annie asked.

“A little” I replied.

“Common, don’t be. She is your friend. You will be fine”

“I hope so” I muttered and Annie parted me.

We exit the house and boarded a cab. I kept playing with my fingers.

We got to the Coffee shop and came out of the cab.

“Let’s do this baby!” Annie said.

I nodded and followed after her. We entered the shop and I sighted Chloe seated on a chair close to the door operating her phone.

I’m the one who needs her help and she arrived here before me. Great!

I stood on one spot until Annie rolled her eyes and dragged me towards Chloe’s table.

“Uhm hi!” Annie was the first person to talk and Chloe raised her head up from her phone.

“Hey there” Chloe smiled at Annie and then glanced at me.

“Long time no see” she said warmly.

“I guess..” I muttered taking my seat.

Annie took her seat as well.

“Let talk over coffee” Chloe suggested and Annie agreed nodded.

We all ordered for a cup of coffee and a disturbing silence sets in.

“So Chloe, it nice to meet you. You look pretty by the way” Annie winked.

“Oh thank you.” Chloe tugged her hair behind her back. “You don’t look bad yourself..”

“So am Annie.” She introduced.

“Nice name you got there. I guess you know my name already but will say it anyways. Chloe Campbell!”

“Nice meeting you” They both shook hands.

I sips the coffee quietly watching the two awkwardly.

“So what is it you want to talk to me about ?” Chloe asked and I choked on the coffee.

“Are you okay?” Chloe asked with a concerned look.

“Yeah..yeah am fine” I half smiled.

“Okay…So” Chloe looked at me.

“Well..it..uhm..you see…” I stuttered and Annie slammed her palm on her forehead.

“Let me save you the stress” Annie said and I heaved a sigh of relief.

Annie faced Chloe. “So here’s it. Will tell you a story.”

“Okay…” Chloe replied leaning on her chair.

“Well..There’s this Lady married to her college boyfriend.. he loves her and is good to her..You know, how early marriages is. Well, all of sudden, he changed and well…he started hitting her”

Chloe suddenly got more interested coz she sat well on her chair while I look away playing with my fingers.

“He hit her anytime he got the chance. The woman bear the pain hoping he would change but unfortunately, he did not. It got more worst when he tortured her with sex. She wants a divorce but he doesn’t want her to go whereas, he is still hitting her. So she left for her friend’s house after an incident occurred. All she wants is a divorce with her husband but due to the fact he doesn’t want to take it to court, she decided to take it to court. Now, the problem is, she doesn’t believe she would win the case and she doesn’t have enough proof. So she needs a person’s help who goes by the name Chloe Campbell” Annie completed her story.

“Wait..I don’t quite understand” Chloe arched her brows.

“Camille is the woman in the story” Annie said and I watched as Chloe lost her balance.

“Wait..what the fk!” Her eyes widened and I flinched due to how loud she was.

“Wait..Wait..Wait..first of all, you are married?” Chloe asked in shock.

“Am sorry” I bowed down my head, feeling really bad.

“No…no..you don’t have to be. It not like being in a marriage is a cur$e but..”

“But it becomes a cur$e when the man started hitting her” Annie completed it for Chloe.

“That wasn’t what I wanted to say but okay” Chloe looked at Annie.
“Camille..you should have left the marriage immediately he started hitting you or tell someone about it. Abusive marriages is like the most horrible thing to happen to a woman. It starts from being depressed and then it can also leads to suicide”

“Like the story on your page” Annie saId.

“Yeah..yeah…”

“I didn’t know. I guess I was stupid. A part was expecting him to change. I mean, I loved him like a lot but he suddenly changed and it just so confusing. I had to bear it” I poured out.

“You should have at least talk to someone about it but it fine, the deed is done already. Let go back to the present. He deserves to go to jail.”

“Or get his balls ¢hopped off” Annie interrupted and Chloe gave her a thumbs up.

“I like you already..” Chloe half smiled.
“So Camille, you need a lawyer right?”

“A good lawyer” Annie answered for me.

“That’s easy. He won’t go scof free now that you have involved me.”

“But Chloe..I have a request..” I said.

“What’s that?”

“Can you please not post this on your page? I really don’t want audience” I told her.

“Ooh okay. No problem, I won’t” Chloe assured.
