“I can’t believe this. Why the hell will a man lay his hand on his wife. He doesn’t deserve to live. Infact, he deserves a really painful de.ath. This just spoilt my mood. When he is not an animal, he dare lay his hand on a woman”
I smiled painfully and then looked at her intently. “Oh really?, that means your son is an animal because that is exactly what he does”
“What!” His mom exclaimed shocked.
“What are you talking about?” She asked me.
“maybe you should ask your son that” I rolled my eyes at all.
Asher’s mom looked her son questionably and he shrugged.
“I have no idea what she is talking about? Camile, what is going on?”
“I….”
Asher’s mom interrupted me. “I don’t know what’s up with you but I won’t have you accuse my son that way. do you realize you just called him an animal?, in my presence at that”
“because he..”
she interrupted me again. “that is disrespect to me and to my son of course!, I won’t have you talk to him in that manner”
“mom, just let her be. am sure she didn’t say that on purpose. Camile isn’t like this okay” Asher said calmly and I rolled my eyes.
why is he acting cool and innocent?
“So she called you an animal by mistake?, Can you even hear yourself Asher. I know you love her but that doesn’t give her the right to disrespect you”
“mom, just let it go. please”
“no, I won’t. she have to explain the reason why she said that…”
if she continues dragging this then I will have no choice but to tell her everything. Tell her about her so called perfect son been a man beater and of course, a beast and I would make sure to make nothing untold.
“Mom….”
“I just got angry. I mean why would she call you that. My son can never lay his hand on a woman. That, I am sure of so what made her say that.?”
This time, I decided to talk. “He can’t lay his hand on a woman. That’s what you think?” I scoffed and Asher stood up from the couch in anger.
My eyes moved to his clenched fist and I gulped down nothing.
“I don’t know what have gotten over you this night but I would advise you to stop talking” he said.
“But I was just….”
He interrupted me. “Go to the bedroom. I will join you later”
I made to talk but he beat me to it. “I don’t want to repeat myself”
I decided to keep shut and nods then stupid up. I glanced at Asher’s mom who was looking at me suspiciously and then walked away but I was able to hear Asher’s words to his mom.
“Mom, don’t think about it alright? She didn’t mean to say that”—-
Tsk!, I scoffed as I entered the bedroom. I went to the bathroom to freshening up. Under the shower, I couldn’t stop thinking.
Am going to be sharing the bed with Asher this night. After standing up to him yesterday and my awkward moves today, I don’t think I can stay alone with him.
I touched my chest and it was beating really fast. Am scared. Am still scared of him but am just trying to act strong.
Nothing would happen right? He can’t hit me right? His mom is around so he can’t dare lay his hands on me.
I left the bathroom after the short but disturbing shower and went back to the bathroom with my towel wrapped around my chest.
I wore my nightie and then laid on the bed. Saying a short prayer, I closed my eyes and fell asleep immediately.

A tap on my back woke me up. I groaned and slowly opened my eyes to see Asher staring at me intently.
In fear, I opened my mouth to scream but Asher was quick to place his hand on my mouth.
“What’s wrong with you?” He asked angrily.
“Mmhm mhmm” I mumbled as his hand was still on my mouth.
He removed his hand from my mouth, his gaze still on me.
“What is the meaning of the drama you have been performing?” He inquired, his every muscle tended.
“I don’t know what you are talking about” I feign ignorance.
“Don’t play with me, Camille. Yesterday and today, what is it all about?”
“I still don’t know what you are talking about” I said innocently.
His body locked up in rage as he stared at me and my heart was thudding really hard against my chest.
Oh God, help me.
“Yesterday, you talked back at me, insulted me and pulled a knife at me. Like what the fk have gotten into you?’l
“Nothing” I replied.
“Today, you started behaving stupidly because of my mom’s presence right. I know you purposely made the food salty and then in front of my mom, you called me an animal!”
He moved closer to me and am afraid my heart is going to burst out of my chest anytime soon with the way it is beating too fast.
“Do you know what I wish to do to you, camille” he whispered in my ear and my stomach knotted as fear splintered my heart.
I said nothing. I felt his lips on my ear and slowly he bite it so hard and I almost screamed but he was quick to place his hand on my mouth.
A tear slowly slipped off my eye as I felt pain in my ear. Good thing it’s not bIeeding.
“I don’t know who have been giving you the courage to talk back at me and do these stuffs but I just want you to know you are playing with the wrong person”
He removed his hand from my mouth and I bite my lips painfully and touch my hurting ears. Am not going to break down in front of him. Not anymore.
“You are so dead when my mom leaves” he threatened and panic assailed me but I have to act strong.
“Am not scared of you, Asher” I said confidently.
He smirks evilly. “We shall see” with that, he laid on the bed turning his back on me.
I signed and did same as fear clawed me. I slowly closed my eyes. He is not going to kill me in my sleep right?

I woke up the next morning feeling a bit energetic. I noticed I was alone on the bed. Asher is probably preparing for work or he already left for work.
I stretch my body and got up from the bed. I started feeling thirsty immediately and left the bedroom to go to the kitchen.
I started hearing Asher and his mom’s voice as I moved closer to the living room.
There were both in the living room, their back turned to me and talking.
I forgot my intention to get water in the kitchen and decided to eavesdrop.
“Mom, what are you talking about. Camille is fine. There’s nothing wrong with her” Asher said.
“Listen to me. Will you? She is not fine. That, I am sure of. Can’t you see”
“I really don’t know what you are talking about, mom”
“When I arrived yesterday, Camille looked at me like I was a ghost or something. I wasn’t really bothered about that. Not until later when I came in and then I asked about her hair and she asked me what that is. I was shocked and confused but she later recalled what it is”
“Mom..all this is..”
Asher’s mom cut him off. “Let me finish!” She cautioned. “I then overheard her telling someone on phone about her drugs or something of sort. She talked about effects if she don’t take her drugs and asked for it today. It have been bothering me honestly, her actions during dinner too was just absurd ..I put everything together and realized maybe your wife is..”
Asher cut her off. “Mom, I hope you are not thinking about…”
“Yes I am. I think she has mental illness and she been in this house is not safe for you and me. You have to let her…”
“Mom, what are you talking about, let my wife go. Seriously?, The fk!, camille is fine. She is alright. Nothing is wrong with her. Even if she is psychotic, then am going to find a solution to it. Not let her go. She is my wife and will continue to be” Asher said.
His mom scoffed. “I can see you have done crazy too. She is not meant for you. You need to get that straight and even apart from her mental illness which I am sure she is suffering from now, don’t you think she is barren”
My mouth dropped open at this.
“Mom!”
“Am been serious here and don’t you dare snap at me. It been two years. Two good years and she haven’t conceived yet. I came here hoping she would probably be pregnant but no she is not. Am not getting younger and neither are you!”
“It’s just two years, not twenty two years. She is going to get pregnant at the right time okay? Let just forget about all this, I need to be at work” Asher said tiredly,
“Asher! We are not done with this conversation!” His mom said sternly but Asher just turned at the same time with his mom and saw me standing and looking at them with a shocked expression.
His mom covered her mouth not expecting to see me.
