Desmond’s POV
” your brother?” Simon asked surprised.
” yeah, David Rolland……and he’s just teasing you” Vickie said.
” I’m sorry bro, I didn’t know……i just thought….” he apologized.
” yeah yeah……..it’s okay” I said sarcastically.
” I just got carried away…… if I had know I wouldn’t have try to hit you” he said.
” yeah I know……and you should be lucky you didn’t” I said grinning.
” Des..uhmm…..David…….stop it” Vickie shunned.
” fine…whatever……… good to finally meet you Simon” I said.
” the pleasure is mine” he replied and we all sat down.
The waitress came to our table and serve us some food and wine, we started eating then Simon began the talking.
” So David, your sister told me you work in a government firm” he said and I glance at Vickie who nodded.
” yeah, but not in Lagos ” I answered.
” yeah she told me……so how is work?” he asked.
” work is good……though it can be stressful sometimes” I said.
” yeah I can relate……but what’s a man gotta do” he said.
” yeah ” I said.
” I know you must be a cool guy” he said.
” why did you say that? ” I asked.
” when I visited your house few weeks ago, I met with your mother and younger sister……..your family are the coolest I’ve ever met” he said smiling and I glanced at my sister and see her smiling as well.
” I told you there’s nothing to worry about” Vickie said.
” yeah, though at first……i fear you might be different cause you’re a man, since then I’ve been asking Abby Here about things that could get you angry” he said.
” get me Angry?…….so you want to purposely get me Angry? ” I asked.
” No No No, that’s not what I meant…… It’s quite the opposite……i really don’t want to do anything that could get you angry” he said.
” oh that’s cool……..i appreciate that…. thanks” I said.
” You’re welcome” he said smiling.
” you know she couldn’t stop praising you at home, how great you are….how cool you are and I was wondering who could be making my sister go crazy like that” I said.
” really?” Simon asked smiling.
” You are crazy David” she said.
” so I decided I just have to see this man with my own eyes, one of the reason I came here today” I said.
” I’m glad bro” he said.
” I just want to ask you just two question that’s all” I said and he stopped eating.
” anything…….please ask away” he said.
” do you love her? ” I asked.
” I love very much…with my whole heart….i will do anything for her” he said sincerely.
” can you protect her?” I asked.
” yes……the safest place she could ever be is beside me…….i will protect her with my life” he said and my sister is busy blushing to his words.
” okay……you know I have a reason for asked you those questions….i just want to know if you truly love her or maybe you’re just playing with her feelings” I said then continue.
” So I will give you a chance, if you’re doing any of those……it’s better you stop now while you still can before it’s too late” I said.
” I’m not playing her…..i will never do anything to hurt her” he said.
” i really hope you’re true to your word cause if you ever do……you will hate yourself so much that you will wish to die and even death won’t accept you” I said sternly.
” DAVID” Vickie shouted at me angrily.
” please don’t mind him…….he’s just teasing you……don’t let his words get to you” Vickie said and he smiled.
” it’s okay we are man after all” he said and I joined in smiling.
” yeah we are” I replied.
” I totally understand him trying to protect you and all that……I will do the same for my family” he said.
” I’m glad you understand” I said then we continue eating and vickie keeps giving me an angry glare but ignored it instead.
After we finished eating the waitress came to clear the table and Vickie excuse herself to the rest room.
” so are you enjoying the party? ” Simon asked sipping his wine.
” uhmm…yeah……i don’t go to party that much but this is not that bad” I replied.
” that’s good…..so are you in a relationship?” he asked.
” relationship?” I asked back.
” don’t mind me for prying, it’s just that I see you for someone that protect those he loves” he said.
” yeah you’re right about that……but the relationship part….Nah….don’t have time for that” I said.
” oh….i see” he said.
” uhmm…about what I said earlier I….”
” nah…..it’s okay…..i know you didn’t mean all of that….you’re just probably trying to scare me…..i get that” he said.
” uhmm…..actually I wanted to tell you that I meant it…….I meant every word I told you…..i love my family and I won’t let anyone hurt them” I said.
” I’m just saying all of that…….to make you see reason” I added then I see Vickie coming back.
” hey guys, how is it going?” she asked as she sat back.
” cool……we are just talking about sport that’s all” I said.
” oh that’s cool……sorry to interrupt….i have to steal him away from you” Vickie.
” where?” Simon asked.
” let’s go dance” she said and he stood up.
” Coming bro” he said.
” David…..be cool, okay” Vickie warned.
” yeah whatever ” I replied as they left to the dance floor.
This love of a thing is true after all….. Love can turn even the wisest person to a dumb one and make the strongest person vulnerable.
Love can turn a king to slave and open challenges to come in from every angle.
Love makes people weak, if you get closer to love, you once open chance for people to see your weak spot which is why I have to stay away from you people in other to protect you.
Not long after as I keep sipping my wine and watched as people dance, one of Vickie’s friends came to sit beside me.
” Hey” she said.
” hy” I replied.
” you remember me…..Laura we met earlier ” she said.
” yeah I do” I replied.
” so are you having fun?” she asked.
” not so much……but I’m drinking wine so it counts for fun” I replied.
” That’s no fun, c’mon let’s dance” she offered her hand.
” I’m sorry I will have to turn you down…….sorry, I don’t dance” I replied.
” it’s okay……we can just chat” she said.
” that will be cool” I said and we started chatting.
We continue chatting for some minutes and I must say she’s nice to be with, I can feel the aura of her wanting us to get closer but I ignored it.
I fabricate the things I said to her and make sure it didn’t contradict to what we planned just in case she talk about it with my sister.
Things are complicated enough I better not add more to the fire, there are still those that doesn’t like me and if we are talking about desperate people, they can do anything anytime.
” hahahahaha” she laughed as I keep cracking up some jokes.
” so bad……your sister don’t talk about you at all……and we treat each other like family” she said.
” well that’s because I’m not always around……i don’t stay here in Lagos” I said.
” so where did you stay? ” she asked and then my sister and her boyfriend came back.
” hey guys” Vickie said as they sat down.
” cool……your brother is damn cool, and handsome too” Laura said smiling.
” thank you for keeping him company ” she said.
” anytime……beside he’s fun to be with” Laura said.

(An hour Later)
We greeted some people and bade our goodbyes to Vickie’s friends while I hugged Laura before she left.
We made our way outside to our car as Simon escorted us, as we got to the car, I entered waiting for Vickie.
She and her boyfriend stood outside whispering to themselves, then I caught them kssing, I had to press the horn button on the car to stop them.
They disengage and Vickie entered and I ignited the car and Simon came to the car.
” nice meeting you bro ” Simon said.
” same here” I replied and as he was about to leave I stopped him.
” Simon, I want to tell you something ” I said.
” looks like you have alot to tell me today……but don’t worry speak” he said.
” There’s something Vickie will tell you…….a secret we intended to keep in our family…..she wanted to let you in on the secret and I will let her tell you” I said.
” But, not Now……..for you to know about that ….you will have earn it…..only then will she tell you” I added.
” should I be worried? ” he asked.
” No…..there’s no need for that……it’s nothing harmful…..so she will only tell you after you earn the right to know” I said.
” No problem, brother ” he said.
” alright……bye” I said.
” bye bro………bye Abby, I will call you” he said and Vickie nodded and I drove off .
” Thank you for that……though you tried to be a pain in the neck” Vickie said.
” I will do anything to protect my family ” I said.
” and so will I” she replied.
” I just don’t know what’s wrong with you girls…..you grow so soft and tender, easy to catch feeling…… it’s not like that for us men” I said.
” Is that what you’re trying to prove with you and Laura” she said.
” I see you and Laura talking earlier……any progress?” she asked.
” Nah……she’s great and all that but I told you before…….i can’t get involve with any girl” I said.
” look here brother, I know you aren’t just fighting for us per se but, still, you’re a man with a code and I respect that” she said.
” I’m willing to die for my loved ones, without people to die for, there’s no reason to live, I need to help others as well” I said.
” Yeah but there’s no reason for life if you don’t take time to enjoy it. You’re too caught up in your job” she said.
” You gotta get out there and meet some friends, take Pilates class, have some fun” she added.
” I’m afraid if I take a break bad things might happen, people might get hurt” I said.
” Bad things will always happen, for one reason or another…….why?…..cause this world we live in is not fair……you can’t protect everyone Desmond…..you can only try your best” she said.
” alright, fine…….i will think about it” I said.

We got back home some minutes later and I drove into the compound and then parked the car.
We got down and entered the house and saw my sister still in the parlour.
” Welcome back” grace greeted.
” how are you Grace ?” Vickie said.
” I’m fine……how is the party? ” grace asked looking at me.
” oh don’t look at me,……she caught all the fun today” I said.
” don’t mind him…he’s denying it…..where’s mom? ” Vickie asked.
” she’s sleeping” grace answered.
” i’m going to my room…….goodnight” Vickie said.
” goodnight” grace and I said then went to her room while I sat beside Grace on the couch.
” what do you think about Vickie’s boyfriend?” I asked.
” he’s nice and good, I don’t see anything bad in him…….do you get to meet him?” she asked.
” yeah……i just don’t want to see any of you get hurt” I said.
” do you think he can be bad?” she asked.
” I don’t know……though I tested him and I nearly got punched in the face” I said and she gasped.
” Whaat” she said.
” yeah, I think he’s trying to protect Vickie that’s all…….i already warned him and made sure my warning sync into his head just incase he mess up” I said.
” and also…..if you notice anything about her…….you tell me immediately ” I said.
” okay…….i promise ” she said.
Few minutes later I went back to my room and call it a night.

(Next Day)
I woke up the next day and dress up and taking my bath, then my sister came into my room hurriedly.
” Bro……come to the parlour now” grace said.
” What happened grace? ” I asked.
” the News…… Come see the News” she said and I went with her to the parlour and I saw the News on the TV.
” ………so unfortunate that the police couldn’t the people responsible for this”
” this people made it clear that the reason they do this is because of MIA”
” this is the second time this week and we haven’t seen or heard from MIA, why would this people do this”
” just few days ago……we got a report about a bomb blast from one of the police station around the vicinity which killed about four officer and 10 injured ones”
” Now just this morning a bomb was tied to the children school bus, thankfully none of the kids die as people quickly notice the bomb but few of the children were injured”
” what could be happening in Hanford right now?……what could be their reason?…..who is so heartless to do this to our beloved city…..i pray such person is found and brought to justice ” the reporter concluded.
” Oh My God” Vickie exclaimed as the TV shows how people were injured and the police station that was blown but not my own district.
” who could do such evil thing?” I thought then my phone started ringing, I checked it and see that it’s the DIG.
” hello sir” I said.
” where the hell are you MIA? ” he asked.
” I’m not around sir” I replied.
” Did you see the News?……The city is in crisis” he said.
” I just saw the News ” I answered.
” this people are saying you’re the reason they are doing this…….do you know who it could be?” he asked.
” you and I know I have a lot of enemies Sir,……i can’t point at any but could only suggest ” I said.
” well get back here and settle this….get back to your city ” he said.
” sir, what about the suspension? ” I asked.
” Screw suspension…….Get back here Now…..the City need you” he said.
” okay Sir…….I’m coming “.
