Chapter 9
“You don’t know what you’ve gotten yourself into, you son of a jerk,” he smirked as he stared at her.
He was up to something; one could tell just by looking at him, and Haris might not be safe now.
Whatever he was up to, it was nothing good and something dangerous.
They all sat down on the couch, staring at the television, while Evelyn rested her head on Haris’ shoulder.
He was a dear friend, someone who supported her no matter what, loved her deeply, and would do anything for her.
“Is everything okay at work? You look stressed,” Haris said, patting her hair gently, and Evelyn just sighed, closing her eyes.
She couldn’t tell him that her boss was her ex; she knew Haris wouldn’t allow her to work there anymore.
“I am fine,” she replied, and Haris shrugged his shoulders. Ava was peacefully sleeping on the couch, and a smile crept across Evelyn’s face as she looked at her sister.
Everything she endured, everything she did, was for her family. She didn’t want to see Ava and her mother suffer.
Her phone rang, breaking the silence, and she picked it up from the table without bothering to check the caller ID.
?”Hello,” she answered the call.
?”You know, with everything in me, I am trying not to break into that house and punch that jerk. So I advise you to get your head off his shoulder,” he said, breathing heavily, indicating he was controlling his anger.
Evelyn’s eyes widened, and she quickly moved away from Haris, making him frown. Fear gripped her as she thought of Martin catching them in that moment.
‘Why can’t he just leave me in peace?’ she thought.
?”Good girl,” he said, and the call ended.
She moved to the window only to see a black car parked outside, and she quickly closed the curtains.
“Are you okay, Evelyn?” Haris asked, concerned, and she just nodded, forcing a smile.
“I will take Ava to sleep,” she said, moving toward the little figure lying on the couch, and carried her.
“Good night, Evelyn,” Haris said, and she just nodded.
She brushed her hair back and stared at her sister’s sleeping face. She couldn’t sleep; she was restless. Tears streamed down her eyes. Why was she feeling this way?
She was hurt, seeing Martin again was never a dream she had prayed for. She missed him dearly when she broke up with him, but she never wanted to see him again.
He was the guy who had ruined her, who had made her never trust men, except for a few months ago when she met Haris.
His toxic behavior and possessiveness were something to be afraid of.
When he was possessive of what was his, he was dangerous and capable of extreme actions.
She suddenly remembered the time Martin tried to harm a fellow student because they were laughing together.
(Flashback)
Students were scattered around the gigantic building, working either in groups or alone.
The school building was large, and the compound was beautiful, adorned with flowers, making it look perfect.
Evelyn was walking alongside a guy, laughing together.
Who was he?
He was Alexander, a course mate of Evelyn’s.
Yes, they were in college, both studying to become doctors.
“That lecturer needs to be beaten; he is so wicked. I haven’t even studied for the past two days, and suddenly he gives us a test,” he complained bitterly,
She was wearing a skirt with a floral design and a one-shoulder top. Her hair was styled in a ponytail, with a band wrapped around it. She carried a school bag while holding a thick textbook in her hand.
“I’m sure I’m going to fail that test,” he said, and Evelyn just rolled her eyes.
“I know you’re not going to fail. Besides, you’re a bookworm,” he said, and they both burst into laughter.
“Hey, watch out!” he yelled and quickly grabbed her waist, pulling her to the side. Almost immediately, someone rushed past them on a bicycle.
“Son of a jerk,” Alexander yelled and helped her dust off her body.
“Thank you,” Evelyn said, and Alexander just winked at her, making her laugh.
“Let’s go,” she said, but almost immediately, someone grabbed her hand, and she knew that grip anywhere.
Her mind raced like the beat of a drum. He had warned her several times not to talk to any guys, but she was trying to prove to him that he couldn’t control her.
She turned around slowly to look at him, only to meet his deadly gaze.
“Hey Martin, calm down. We’re just friends,” Evelyn said, grabbing hold of his hand. But he pushed her away and punched Alexander in the face, making him fall to the ground.
“Martin, stop!” Evelyn screamed, but she didn’t dare move closer to him. She knew she would be punished by him, and that was the part that scared her the most.
By now, the school building was filled with people, as everyone looked on. Martin was known to be her overprotective boyfriend, and most boys never associated with her because they feared him. However, some admired him for his handsomeness and brilliance. Yes, Martin was a brilliant guy.
“Haven’t you heard? She’s mine, and no boy is allowed to get close to her or touch her,” he screamed, punching Alexander, and blood started coming out of his face.
Wherever she went, she was identified as Martin’s fiancée, and people kept their distance. Even some girls were jealous of her.
People didn’t dare get close to him. Even the teachers were afraid of him because of how dangerous he was and because his father could close down the school with his money.
“Martin, please leave him alone,” Evelyn yelled, crying, and she did the only thing that came to her mind.
She knelt down.
“Please, Martin, stop. You’re going to kll him,” she yelled, and Martin stopped to look at Evelyn, who was crying.
That was the only thing that seemed to have an effect on him. He hated to see her cry; it was something that deeply affected him, even though Evelyn didn’t know it.
Seeing her tears was his weakness, something he hated so much.
He stood up and grabbed hold of Evelyn’s hand, dragging her away.
End of flashback.
She wiped away her tears, reminiscing about those incidents.
Alexander never spoke to her after that day, and whenever she tried to talk to him, he ran away.
College life was boring for her because of him. She couldn’t try to make friends unless she wanted to be punished.
You must be wondering if there were only males in college.
Of course not.
She made a few female friends, but it was kept secret because Martin was also against her making female friends. He thought they might corrupt her.
Martin might have been toxic, but he cared a lot about her. He wanted her to have a bright future and urged Evelyn to focus on her studies. He believed she should stay away from girls, thinking they might corrupt her.
He made her incredibly clever because during those times at school when they had examinations, he would make her study throughout the night.
She wiped away her tears and stood up from the bed. She opened the small drawer and retrieved a picture.
It was a picture they took when they were in college, and it was something she held dearly. Even after she broke up with him, she still kept it to herself.
She took out a big book with the words “MY DIARY” boldly written on it.
She took a pen from the table and started writing.
“Dear diary,” she began.
“I am sorry I have ignored you for some time now, but I was kind of busy and depressed. My mother is currently in the hospital, and I was looking for money to get her medication.
I finally found a job, diary. It is something to be happy about, right? But it feels like the worst decision I have ever made in my life.
“It hurts so much, diary, to see him once again. It brings back old memories.
He oppressed me, he kssed me against my will. Dear diary, please be my witness in anything he does to me.”
“Good night, dear diary.”
She sighed and placed it gently on the table before lying on the bed. She sighed once again and closed her eyes.
