Chapter 3

She pushed the door slowly, looking around the familiar sitting room. Dropping her bag, she laid on the floor, tears pouring down from her eyes.

She should have known he was the one when they described him as wicked and arrogant because that’s what he really is.

Dating him was like h’ll for her, and meeting him brings back those disgusting memories.

“Sis,” she heard a tiny voice call, and she quickly wiped her tears, turning to look at the smaller figure behind her, then she forced a smile.

It was all visible on her face—pain, regret, fear—all shown on her face.

“Everything okay?” the smaller figure asked, and Evelyn nodded, while the latter just smiled before rushing towards her.

“You got the job?” she asked excitedly, and Evelyn just stared at her.

She was one of the reasons why she was trying to get this job. She just wanted her to be able to take care of her and their mother.

Ava, that’s her sister’s name. A pretty little girl, smart, and intelligent. Evelyn just wanted to always put a smile on her cute face.

Their mother was in the hospital, diagnosed with b.reast cancer, something dangerous, and they needed money for medication.

So she decided to work, but things weren’t falling into place.

Her dad was a case of his own. Being accused of mvrder was something worse, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

“You didn’t get the job?” she asked sadly as she stared at her sister, not uttering a word.

What was she supposed to say? That she got the job, but her ex was the boss? Working with Martin was a dangerous game, and she was not going to be the victim.

“Have you eaten?” Evelyn asked, changing the topic, and the younger girl nodded, smiling.

“When are we visiting mom?” Ava asked, pouting her lips, and Evelyn ruffled her hair.

“We’ll go this weekend when I find a job,” Evelyn said, and Ava nodded.

She had made up her mind. She wasn’t going to work with Martin, and she was also determined to get a job so she could treat her mother’s illness.

“Okay,” Ava replied before limping to the couch, turning on the small TV in the room.

Evelyn wiped away the tears forming in her eyes, picked up her bag, and then realized her phone was ringing.

She frowned, staring at the strange number before picking it up.

“Hello, Eve,” his familiar husky voice sent shivers down her skin.

Her bI.ood froze in fear, tears gathered in her eyes, her chest was beating like a party drum, and she just wished this was all a dream.

It had been long since she felt this feeling of fear, and he was one of the few people who had gotten her really scared.

Her hand collided with her chest, trying to calm herself down, but it wasn’t working. Fear had overcome her, had taken full control of her, and she couldn’t prevent it.

Fear—a feeling of destruction, a feeling that can make someone feel vulnerable, uncomfortable. And this was what she was feeling.

“Say something, Eve. I want to hear your voice,” he said, and she just kept quiet, not knowing what to say. She couldn’t speak; fear had taken control of her body.

She should have done more research on the company. She had thought the name was familiar, and if only she knew who it was, she would have run for her dear life.

“You don’t want to answer? Well, I just want to tell you to dress nicely tomorrow,” he said in a husky tone, and Evelyn knew he was smirking because that was one of his habits he can’t stop.

“I am…I am not working for you…you,” she stuttered, followed by a chuckle from the other side of the phone.

“Eve, I know you were coming to the interview from the start. Seeing your picture and CV, I knew you were coming, and I just can’t let you work away from me one more time,” he said. Eve gasped and slowly sat down on the chair.

He knows. He knows she was coming.

“I am not working,” she said softly.

“We will see about that,” Martin said, and ended the call.

The phone slowly dropped from her hand, making her little sister turn to look at her.

“Are you okay?” she asked in a concerned tone, but he didn’t reply.

Her body visibly shaking with fear. What has he done to her to make her feel so afraid?
