Chapter Nine
GRACE POV
“Well if you didn’t like him, you should have kept it to yourself. Stop trying to make it obvious please!”.I scoffed, frowning.
“Was it really obvious?”.He asked.
“Of course it was, you embarrassed the both of us. You were staring at him as if he was a predator who caught his prey”.I said, my frown was going deeper.
“I was only being protective”.
“Point of correction, you were being overprotective not protective”.
“Fine, am sorry. Don’t get too angry”.
“You should have thought of not getting me angry before acting that way”.
“I said am sorry”.
“Whatever!”.
The car stopped at its destination and I quickly went out of the car so did Dave.
“Bye Mr Lucas”.We both said and Mr Lucas smiled before droving the car away.
“Grace….”.Dave called but I didn’t turn back, I continued walking.
“I know you are angry but I did it for your own good, that guy isn’t trustworthy. Can’t you see the way he looks at you with so much love?”.He said and I quickly turn back to him since he was behind me.
“Dave, I know you don’t like Kyree but please stop speaking bad of him. He is a nice person, he kept me company in school when no one else did, he treats me well too. He don’t love me, okay? This is actually the second day we have met so it’s impossible for him to love me, he just can’t even love me. So please Dave, delete that thought from your mind cause it isn’t true”.I said and he sighed.
“I just thought…”.
“You thought wrong Dave and you should let go of this over protectiveness, it’s annoying! Am almost sixteen years old, I know what and who is good for me, you don’t have to decide for me cause I haven’t decided who and what is good for you. You talk with Vanessa, you laugh with her and have never for once told you that you should stop doing those things with her. Even if I disliked her, I won’t have told you cause it would make you feel hurt but still you told me that you didn’t like Kyree without thinking about how sad I would feel hearing that from you”.I said sadly and his eyes dimmed.
“Am so sorry about that Grace but am only being honest, I really don’t like that guy. Be careful when you are around him, he isn’t trustworthy”.He said and walked away leaving me speechless.
HER ADVERSITY: Chapter 1 – 10
The day flew by and a new day came. I prepared for school and ate my breakfast before I and Dave sat in the car. Mr Lucas began driving and my phone beeped, it was a message from my friend, Victoria.
“Hey girl, sorry for not replying your message, I was busy”.She sent and I smiled.
Victoria is my age mate but am older than her with just two months. She is dark skinned unlike me and she got a pretty face, pointed nose and dark eyes.
Her parents are rich but not richer than mine. Her father whose name I have forgotten is a politician and her mother, Mrs Rose is an actress, a famous one in Nigeria.
We have been friends for nine years and I value our friendship, long distance can’t even stop us from being friends.
“It’s okay, how are you doing?”.I sent her and she replied almost instantly.
She is fast in typing, I don’t know how she does it but it’s really cool.
“Am fine, am terribly missing you. When are you gonna return, huh? Don’t tell me it would take long”.She sent again.
I wanted to reply her but paused when the car stopped at school. I stepped out so did Dave. We waved at Mr Lucas as he drove the car away, then I turned back to my phone.
“Gonna text you later, am busy now. Love ya *smile sticker*”.I texted her.
“Now, we path ways again”.Dave groaned as we walked out of the parking lot.
“It’s not like we aren’t gonna see each other again”.I rolled my eyes.
“Fine! See ya in the cafeteria”.He huffed and I chuckled as I watched him walk away.
I got into my class after few minutes of walking and sat on Jeanann’s seat, of course Jean was sitting on her seat writing something on her notebook. She must be updating her note but why is she silent, she must have noticed my presence but she choose to remain silent, why?
“Hey Jane!”.I voiced out but she kept quiet with her face expressionless as she kept writing. I felt sad immediately.
Why is she treating me this way? Why is she ignoring me?
“Jane…”.She cut me off.
“You didn’t tell me, I thought we were friends”.Her tone seems kind of harsh and cold.
“I don’t understand, what…”.She cut me off, her eyes were boring into mine.
“You didn’t tell me Grace, you didn’t tell me that you were an African”.She said, frowning.
My mouth went agape as she said ‘African’. How did she know? Who told her? I didn’t tell anyone about this in school except the teacher I saw when I came into the class for the first time, so how did she know?
“I…I…”.She cut me off obviously pissed.
“Geez! Don’t dare try to deny this Grace, you are an African and you never bothered to tell me”.She said dropping her pen on her notebook.
“I wasn’t trying to deny it in fact am an African and I didn’t tell you because you because you didn’t need to know….”.She cut me off again.
“Really! I didn’t need to know? For Goodness Sake! We are friends Grace and friends shouldn’t keep things away from each other”.She retorted angrily.
“Am sorry to say this Jean but you are not my friend, the fact that I sit with you doesn’t make you my friend, the fact that I talk to you doesn’t make you my friend. This is our fourth day of meeting but you are already talking of friendship, who does that?”.I said watching her expression but she only scoffed, glaring at me.
“I can’t believe you are saying this Grace, I just can’t believe it. How can you say something like that? Why don’t you wanna be my friend? Perhaps, you hate me!”.She was clearly angry as she spoke, her frown was going deeper.
“Come on Jane, I like you but..I don’t want to be friends with you yet. Give me some time, let me study you, we just met for a few days, just be patient, okay? I might take you as a friend one day”.I said but she eyed me scornfully.
“Yep, one day. You aren’t even sure”.She mumbled turning back to her notebook.
“Jean!”.I called but she didn’t respond, she hissed.
“Come on Jane! Don’t take it that way”.She still didn’t speak.
I took in a deep breath and was about calling her name again when a teacher walked in, it was our biology teacher. He talked about a project we were gonna carry out together throughout next week and blah blah blah…he left the class. Three more teachers came before the bell was rung signifying lunch break.
I began packing my books into my bag but paused when I felt some liquid trying to pass out of my body. It was water – urine!
I sighed and turned to Jean who was about leaving her seat.
“Jane”.I called but she didn’t answer me, she continued walking. Darn it! Who is going to direct me to the restroom now?
I frowned lightly and walked out of the class but suddenly, I bumped into someone.
“Kyree”.I said, surprised to see him.
“Is that your way of saying sorry for bumping into me?”.He smiled.
He was putting on a white tee shirt and dark jean short. On the white tee shirt some words written; ‘HBD Ky, we *love sticker* you’
“Hope you like it?”.He caught me staring at his tee shirt.
“Yeah, it’s lovely”.I said.
“Thanks. My mum had it done on my fifteenth birthday and now am two years older but I couldn’t stop wearing it. It shows mum’s love”.His smile grew wider making me smile too but my smile dropped when I remembered how Dave embarrassed him yesterday.
“Kyree, about how my brother treated you yesterday am so sorr…”.
“Stop it Grace, don’t apologize. It isn’t his fault nor yours, it does happen and no one should be blamed for it”.He said and I almost gasped. Why is he so nice?
“Thank you Kyree”.I said but I noticed he frowned. What’s wrong?
“Kyree?”.I said and he scoffed.
“Grace, can you do me a favour?”.He asked and I nodded.
“What?”.I asked.
“Please don’t call me Kyree, you can call me Ky”.He said and I chuckled.
“Why?”.I asked.
“I don’t know, most people call me Ky and I want you to call me Ky too”.He said and I let out a small smile.
“Oka…”.I stopped speaking when I felt a drop of urine on my pantie. Oh my Gosh! I need to go to the restroom.
“Hmm Ky, am pressed. Can you lead me to the restroom?”.I asked.
“Sure, why not?”.He said and began leading the way. I followed him and we got to the female restroom which opposite the male restroom.
“I will be waiting”.He winked and walked away. I got into the female restroom and let out all the urine in my blender.
I washed my hands in a running water but when I was about walking out of the restroom, I heard a noise, it was more like a fall and it was from the male restroom.
I didn’t want to go there but when curiosity got the best part of me, I found myself walking to the male restroom.
I pushed the door open but was more than shocked to see Dylan laying helplessly on the floor with blood oozing from his nose.
