Episode 10
Desmond’s POV
(FIVE HOURS LATER)
We drove for five hours before we reach the desert, which is few miles away from the border of Cameroon.
“look sharp everyone, stay sharp we are on open ground ” the Captain said.
We all keep looking all over the desert in case there’s any surprises but I know very well they won’t come out until we have their leader.
Two hours later we reached Cameroon then we head straight to the prison holding the man.
We got to the prison few hours later and the Captain signed some paper for the transfer.
We need to stay the night cause it’s getting dark already, we have to wait till tomorrow morning before we can leave.
They arranged a place for us at the prison to stay for the night, we refuel the car, fill belly and rested for tomorrow.

(NEXT DAY)
We all woke up as early as four o’clock to get on with our journey, the prisoner was brought out.
He was in chains and his head is covered with hood, the Captain went to him and confirm.
He turned out to be the one we came for then he was taken inside the car and locked.
” Let’s move out, Soldier ” the captain said then we all entered the car and drove out of the prison.
Two hours later we drove across the border of Cameroon and back to the desert where we expected the ambush.
It’s dawn already But Just like the first time we saw nothing which made me think maybe there’s nothing to be worry about.
We are half way away from the border when notice a disturbance at the far east from our position.
” we’ve got company ” the Captain said through the comms then I look closely to their direction.
” What? ” I muttered as I saw a legion of terr©rist coming right to our position.
” Let’s drive as fast we could out of the desert and keep them away from us ” the Captain said.
” prepare for combat, it’s an ambush ” he added then we all target them and ready to fire.
We are extremely outnumbered, they are too many for us, I watched as they drove faster and closer to us with their numerous cars.
” Fire” the Captain commanded and all the soldiers started shooting at them as they get closer.
The soldiers driving each of our cars try to drive as fast they could but they couldn’t cause we are in a desert.
But the terr©rist seems to have the right car for the sand cause they are getting so much closer.
” Alpha team 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, slow them down…….the rest of you on me” the Captain said then about five cars slowed down a little bit and started firing at the terrorist.
The remaining four vehicle which I’m among keep going while I watched as the soldiers returned fire with the enemies.
I know they are going to be killed cause they are outnumbered, the soldiers were able to take down few of their car, but it didn’t take long before the blow up the vehicle and pursue after us.
” They are closing up on us” I shouted as they close the meters between us.
” Soldiers, it’s now or never” the Captain said then we started firing at them.
I bring out a grenade and throw it at their car which blow up immediately, the rest of the soldiers did the same.
When we all ran out of grenade we started shooting at them and they did the same.
I noticed one of the terrorist bringing out a RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) then target us.
” RPG, RPG, TAKE COVER” I shouted then we all bend down.
They launched the grenade at us which blow up one of our vehicle, but few of the soldiers were able to jump down.
The rest of them also bring out a RPG and targeted us then we started shooting at them.
The bullet hit one of them which made them blow each other, the rest launched the grenade and fortunately they missed.
Out of nine our cars remain three as we draw closer to the end of the desert, I looked back and see them already behind us.
They shoot at our car while we shoot back at them then I started targeting the tire of their vehicles.
The bullet burst their tire which cause their car to tumble, we continue shooting till their car remain just seven.
Then suddenly out the car carrying their leader got hit and it tumbled and fell.
We have no choice but to stop the car and bring out the prisoner, two soldiers went to bring out the criminal While the rest of us shoot back them.
They are able to bring out the leader and we use the car as cover cause they are close already.
” Blackbird, take him out of here we will hold them down for you” the Captain said.
” I can’t do that…….i can’t leave you all alone ” I said.
” you will do that cause it’s an order” the Captain said.
” yes sir” I replied.
” Now go, two of you go with him ” the Captain said then I took the criminal to one of the cars.
Two soldiers entered the car with me then I drove off, I looked back and see as the Captain and other soldiers hold them down.
I continue driving till we reached the other side of the desert, I drive into the state of Taraba.
I continue driving for some hours then I noticed something wrong, I noticed we are being followed.
” Keep your open soldiers, they are unto us” I said then the soldier look around.
I noticed they are getting closer then I keep changing route just for me to lose them.
I drove for few more minutes then I stopped when I realized they blocked the road with their car.
I drove backwards only for me to stop again cause I’ve been surrounded and there’s no other way.
” You know there’s still time for you to hand me over to them” the criminal said.
” Shut the hell up” I said to him.
” what are we going to do now?” one of the soldiers asked.
” Let me go now and you may live…….there’s no way out of this” the criminal said then I pulled out my sidearm.
” Watch Me,…….soldiers take cover, it’s going to be very bumpy ride ” I said then drove forward shooting at the terr©rist car.
I drove as fast as I could and at the same time shooting them then burst their car out of the way and drove off.
I was able to kill few of them and the remaining pursue right after us, they started shooting at our car not minding their leader being in the same car with us.
” you are on crazy ba$tard soldier” the criminal said.
” you don’t think you will get off that easily ” I said.
” You’re not an ordinary soldier” thr criminal said.
” Actually he’s not a soldier at all” one of the soldiers answered.
” No it’s not possible, I’ve seen the way you shoot, the way you carry yourself, you’re definitely a soldier ” the criminal said.
” shut up now or else I will cut off your t©ngue ” I said.
” I was also a soldier before I decided to embrace who I really am, so I know when I see a soldier” the criminal said.
I looked through the side mirror and see about four of their vehicles still after us.
” why can’t this people just stop” one of the soldiers said.
” they can’t cause you still have me, they will never stop” the criminal said.
” Well they can’t get you ” I said.
” Okay……we will see about that” he replied as I drove faster.
” Any other way for us to reach Plateau…..instead of the bridge?” I asked.
” unless we go by the river, river Benue ” one of the soldiers said.
” River?……fine let’s go by the river” I said.
” can we find a boat there? ” I asked.
” yes” he answered.
” alright, just direct me” I said then I drove as he directed and few minutes later I can see the river ahead.
The terr©rist shoot at our car and one of us got injured, we shoot back at them as we make our way to the river.
They targeted our tire then the tires busted and I lost control which cause the car somersaulted.
I opened my eyes after the accident then I saw about ten of them coming closer to our car.
I kicked the car open and try to get out only to be shot countless times by the terr©rist and I fell down.

Author’s POV
After Desmond was shot the terr©rist went to the car and killed the other two soldiers and helped their leader out of the car.
” Ahhhhhh……..Allah hu Akbar, bismillah ” the leader said as they lead him to their car.
Then Desmond opened his eyes and heaved a very deep sigh of relief.
” pheeeeww, I love this bullet proof” Desmond said then he stood up and see them taking the criminal away.
He pulled out his pistol and shot at the four of them, the leader tries to run and he shot his on his leg which make him fell.
The others in the car came out and started shooting at him and Desmond target them one after the other using their leader as bait.
If anyone tries to go over to help their leader he will shoot them down, he did like that to there are about four of them left.
They used their car as cover and Desmond draw closer to them using the wall as cover.
Desmond targeted their legs under the car and shoot them more when they fell to the ground.
Then he went over to them and saw them groaning on the ground theb he shoot them all.
He moved to the leader on the ground then he pointed his gun at him and the leader smiled.
” you can’t kill me……..you have your order ” he said.
” sorry to disappoint you…..I’m not a soldier so it’s doesn’t include me ” Desmond said then shot him three times.
He’s still alive but his breathing is weak which is certain that he’s going to die not too long.
He looked around until he was sure no-one is around then he took the man back inside one of their car then he drove off.
He drove back to the bridge and wait until be was sure no one is following him then he drove off.

(Four hours Later)
Desmond drove right in front of the Army base and when one of the soldiers saw him they opened the gate and he drove in.
He parked the car and dragged the man down, when all the soldiers saw this they all gathered around him.
One of them went to call the Colonel and he came out to see Desmond alone with wounded leader of the Al-fazar terr©rists.
” where are the rest?” the colonel asked.
” we were attacked by his men, and we were outnumbered, the Captain gave me an order to bring him here” Desmond explained.
” what about the captain?” the Col. Asked.
” I don’t think he or anyone made it out sir ” Desmond said.
” What happened to him?” Col. Asked pointing at the barely breathing terr©rist.
” He was shot in encounter when his own people are trying to save him” Desmond said just then the terrorist took his last breath and gave up the ghost.
” He’s gone” one of the soldiers said after checking for vitals.
” take him to the mortuary ” the Col. Said and they carried him away.
” Good Job, Agent Blackbird………you can rest for the day ” the Col said then he went back to his quarter.

Desmond’s POV
I also went back to where we stayed before we left for the mission, and being in that room again made me remember how many men we lost.
At least now that their leader is dead they will be silent for a while, Nigeria will be safe without them.
I can’t go back to Hanford City this evening, it will have to be tomorrow morning.
I was on the bed resting then the colonel entered and I stood up immediately.
“Sir” I saluted.
” I got a call from the Captain, few minutes ago” he said and I was surprised.
” Really?…….Did they make it?” I asked curiously.
” he and few others though they were badly injured and they had to find a clinic to treat themselves ” he said.
” Ahhhhhh……that’s good” I replied.
” I will send some soldier to pick them up, they will be back tomorrow ” he said.
” that’s good, I should let you know…….i have to go back to Hanford City tomorrow morning ” I said.
” Alright, Thank you very much” he said.
” you’re welcome Sir” I said then he turn to leave.
” your car has been refilled, your tire has been pumped ” he said walking away.
” thank you sir ” I said then I lay back on the bed.

(Next Day)
Author’s POV
There is a woman in the bush running with a five month old baby on her left hand and a nine years old girl on her right.
There are about nine men pursuing her with guns and and some other weapons.
” Don’t let her get away” one of the men shouted as they run after her.
The woman and her kids keep running in the bush and the woman was getting tired cause she has been shot at the back.
She noticed she can no longer run anymore and wouldn’t be able to make it out alive then fell.
” Momma” the nine years old girl said.
” listen to me Goodness, here take your sister” the woman said giving the girl the baby.
” Momma, please let’s go” the girl said.
” Goodness, I can’t not anymore but you have to go…….you have to escape from here” the woman said.
” Momma” the girl said crying.
” Take care of your sister, Goodness….. Now go” the woman said then the girl continue running.

Desmond’s POV
I left the Army base as early as four in the morning just for me to reach the reach Hanford city on time.
I continue driving through the bush looking closely cause everywhere just look the same.
The bush all look alike if not for the things I saw on my way here I wouldn’t know which way to follow.
Just as I made the next turn a little came out of nowhere and I stepped on the brake immediately.
” what the……” I said then I got down and see that the girl is holding a baby.
” Heyy, what are you doing here at this time?” I asked the girl.
” Please mister, you have to help my momma, please help her” she said.
” your mommy?…….where is she?” I asked then she pointed inside the bush just immediately I heard a scream coming from place.
” come, come” I said then put them inside the car then I grabbed my gun.
” don’t come out of this car, do you understand?” I said.
” okay ” the girl replied then I went to the bush.
I went in search of the woman I heard her scream earlier in the bush, I keep going then I saw about nine men surrounding a woman.
I couldn’t hear what they are saying and then one of them raised the cutlass to slash the woman.
I pulled out my gun and shoot at them, the remaining turned to my direction and shoot back at me.
Since it’s barely morning they couldn’t see me that well, I move around the bush and shot them one after the other until they are all dead.
I looked around to make sure there aren’t anyone else left then I moved to closer to the woman.
” Heyy, are you okay?” I asked as I saw the woman breathing heavily.
” Ple…..please, you have to find my daughters” the woman said.
” you don’t have to worry about that they are with me, we need to get you to the hospital” I said then I tried to carry her.
” No….No, I can’t….make it…….you have to take them away from here” she said.
” enough talking………let’s get you to the clinic ” I said then carried her and left.
I was half way to the car then I noticed the woman is no longer breathing and I checked her pulse then I see she got nothing.
” Dmn” I cur$ed.

I buried the woman under a tree and make some demarcation and sign to the place then I went back to the car.
” where’s my momma?” the girl asked as I entered the car.
” I’m sorry girl, it was too late ” I said then the cried.
” I’m sorry ” I said again.
” Before she died, she told me to take you out of here,……do you have anywhere to go?” I asked and she nodded negatively.
” what about your father?” I asked.
” Papa is dead” she said crying and I feel sorry for her to be in this position at her age.
” what about any of your family? ” I asked.
” There’s no one, we don’t have anyone” she said.
” I’m so sorry about that, uhmmm……would you like to go with me?” I asked and she looked at me.
” I promise to take care of you and your sister” I said then she nodded affirmative.
” Alright then, let’s go” I said then drove away.
” what’s your name?” I asked as I was driving.
” Goodness, Goodness Matthews ” she answered.
” Goodness, that’s great………what about your baby sister?……..what’s her name? ” I asked.
” MERCY, Her Name is MERCY “.
