CHAPTER 29

?”Hello?” She picked up the call immediately.

?”Hello, my princess,” the deep voice said through the telephone, and Evelyn gasped.

She could recognize that voice from anywhere. Her eyes were tearing up already, her mind racing, and then suddenly there was a smile on her face. A sad smile that revealed all her emotions, all her pains she was trying to hide.

?”Dad,” she whispered, tearing up, and she could imagine him smiling because he loves doing that, even when he is in the worst situation. He always tries to smile because he wants to calm his family down.

?”I heard your mother is sick, so I decided to steal a phone to call you,” he said, and the young girl chuckled.

?”Dad, you will never change, will you?” Evelyn said, and the man sighed.

?”Change is constant, sweetie, but not for people like me,” he said, and Evelyn laughed sadly, tears flowing down from her eyes.

?”Hey sweetie, I can hear you crying, but trust me, I am fine. How is your mother?”

?”She is fine, I mean, she is going for surgery soon,” Evelyn said, and the man sighed in relief.

?”Dad, are you really going to rot in jail for a crime you didn’t commit?” Evelyn said, crying loudly this time, and the man sighed.

?”I need to go, sweetheart. Find a way to visit me and please bring your sister along. I miss her, and I am sure she doesn’t even recognize me,” he said, and the line went dead immediately.

?”Dad,” she called, crying, but got no reply.

It hurt so much. She really wanted to see her father, but her mother had stopped her because she didn’t want her to get hurt by visiting her father in prison. But damn… it hurt so much.

She couldn’t breathe anymore due to the tears.

“I need a drink,” she suddenly said and walked out of the office.

She really wanted to drink away her sorrows. If only it could heal her, she would be so glad to take it every day.

“Evelyn,” Elizabeth called, but she just faked a smile, not bothering to answer her, and Elizabeth noticed it.

She could tell she was not okay. Traces of tears were seen on her cheeks, and Elizabeth just sighed.

‘I hope everything is okay with her,’ she thought, staring at her as she walked out of the company.

Martin frowned when she didn’t pick up the call.

They were having a board meeting soon, and he wanted her to prepare a document.

He dialed the telephone again, but she was not picking up. He rushed toward the glass, trying to see if Evelyn was there.

His eyes widened when he saw her lying on the floor, and without thinking twice, he rushed out of the office.

“Eve,” he opened the door only to see Evelyn crying.

“Eve,” he called, worried, moving towards her, and Evelyn hugged him immediately.

She needed someone to hug, someone to comfort her at this time, someone to share her pains with.

“Hey sweetie, what’s the matter?” he asked, concerned, and Evelyn just stared at him.

“Martin,” she called and hugged him tightly, and he reciprocated immediately.

He didn’t know what was wrong with her, but seeing her in pain hurt him. He hated it when she was hurt, he hated it when she cried.

She was his weakness, his pain, his happiness. That’s what he had come to realize while being with her.

“Do you want to tell me who hurt you and let me deal with the jerk?” he said, gritting his teeth, trying to control his anger, and Evelyn just chuckled.

“No one hurt me, Martin,” she said softly, and Martin sighed.

He really wanted to hurt whoever had hurt her, but her response made him wonder why she was crying.

“What happened, Eve? I hate seeing you cry,” he said sincerely, and Evelyn just scoffed.

“Martin,” she slurred drunkenly, laughing like an id!ot, and Martin frowned.

He looked at the table, and his eyes widened when he saw three bottles of drink on the floor. He scoffed in disbelief, turning back to look at Evelyn.

She was drunk. He was kind of angry seeing his secretary drunk, but he would never get angry at Evelyn for such things.
