Chapter 36

The doorbell rings, and Evelyn opens the door to see Martin standing there, with guards surrounding him as always.

Evelyn rolls her eyes before opening the door for him, and he walks in majestically.

“You look beautiful, Evelyn,” he whispers in her ear, and Evelyn blushes, trying to hide her reaction.

She is still in her nightwear.

“Hmm, I woke up late today. Martin, I’m sorry, so you’ll have to wait,” she says, pouting her lips, and Martin nods, giving her a tight smile.

He is somewhat angry, as he dislikes being late for work. Now, he’s going to be late because of Evelyn, but he doesn’t dare scold her.

“Give me a minute,” she says and walks to the room.

She slowly opened the door, only to find Ava crying silently. She sighed before embracing her.

“Hey, I really want to be at the spelling bee, but I can’t. I have to work,” Evelyn said, and Ava scoffed.

“You can tell your boss to give you a day off. I want you to be at my spelling bee.

I mean, you’re the only family available right now, so why won’t you come with me?” Ava yelled, crying, and Evelyn just stared at her.

“I know you never care about me, so suit yourself,” she yelled.

“Okay, fine. I will be at your spelling bee. It’s a promise,” Evelyn said, smiling, and the younger girl hugged her tightly.

“Make me proud, okay?” she said, patting her hair, and Ava nodded.

“302,” a police officer yelled, and a man in his late 50s walked in.

The cell door opened, and a police officer dragged him out, making him glare angrily.

“Move,” another police officer yelled and pushed him out.

“Jackson,” a man in his late 50s called. He was tall, and one could tell he was up to no good. Two men stood beside him while he sat on a chair, crossing his legs.

The man’s eyes widened in horror as he stared at the man smirking dangerously.

Jackson sat on the chair, facing him, and glared angrily at the other man, who just chuckled.

“What the heck do you want? I did exactly what you asked of me,” Jackson whispered, and the other man scoffed.

“Yeah, but do you really think I’m that stupid? I know you want revenge, so you sent men after me, but I was quick enough to notice them.

And for your information, they are all dead,” the man said, and Jackson’s eyes widened.

“Screw you! You threatened to tear my family apart unless I did what you asked, and I did. But I won’t stop unless you’re dead,” Jackson said.

“Oh, really? Well, maybe your little princess will have to answer for that first.

She has a spelling bee today, but today is going to be her end,” he said, smirking, and Jackson’s eyes widened.

“Please, don’t do it. She doesn’t know anything. She’s just 10 years old, man,” Jackson yelled, trying to move from the chair, but he couldn’t due to the chains.

“I’m done with him,” he called out to a police officer who walked toward him and dragged him away.

“Please, don’t hurt her.”

“I will, and if you try sending men after me, I’ll go for your beautiful daughter and wife,” he smirked and moved away while they dragged Jackson away.

“Anything the matter, sweetheart? You look bothered,” Martin said, and Evelyn scoffed.

“We aren’t dating yet, so don’t call me that,” she said, and Martin chuckled, grabbing hold of her waist and pulling her closer to him.
